action plan

Every New Year we make resolutions, these resolutions are made with a lot of hope & commitment to make it happen. Somewhere the momentum breaks and we are back to square one.

What if all your New Year resolutions come true this year! Just close your eyes and visualise it. Feel it! Believe it!

This is for people who want to try out new things and believe that whatever a mind conceived it can be achieved! Let’s be honest by the end of January when we look back at our resolutions we see that we have not even started and by the end of the year we have forgotten what was the resolution we set at the beginning of the year. This is completely normal and hence this year let us do something different.

Let’s be prepared with an action plan so that from day 1 we are taking small practical steps towards fulfilling our dreams. We do small things but do them consistently to build momentum.

Lets do this…

  1. Clarify your vision for 2016
  2. Learn to deal with the obstacles
  3. Be ready for action – set dates, milestones and an action plan

So, for all those who want to fulfil their dreams in 2016, take a notebook and a pen/laptop/ smart phone.

Vision: Simply write down everything that you wish to have in 2016. Just write down whatever comes to your mind. Don’t think about how it will happen. Simply write what you want. Clarify Vision: Re – write all your wants using the following rules:

  • State your goals in the positive
  • Add specifics
  • Believe that you will achieve

State your goals in the positive : Don’t write what you won’t do, but what you will do. See yourself as the person who is successful. Keep the word no out of goals.

Add specifics : General goals are a great start, but adding details such as “when”, “where” and “with whom” gives you a better chance of success.

Believe that you will achieve : Positive thinking is a powerful change tool. Knowing that you are capable of achieving your goals is necessary for long term change.

I want to lose weight.

This is stated in the positive, but it without a belief in my ability to lose weight.

I will lose weight.

The positive thinking has been inserted and now I know that I will lose weight.

I will lose 20 pounds in the next six months. Positive thinking, and I have added details how much and by when.

Get out your pencil or pen right now. It is time for you to write your first goal and start on the road to success.

Dealing with obstacles

After working on clarifying your vision our next job is to uncover the hidden challenges/ obstacles that are sabotaging our success.

Often dealing with obstacles get associated with negative thinking – I understand your concerns and let me assure you that dealing with obstacles for solutions is positive thinking while dwelling on obstacles with no action plan is frustrating and negative thinking.

Keep your vision 2016 in front of you and simply write down all the obstacles you can think of. Then use the following framework to DEAL with your obstacles:

Define in Detail: Detailed writing often helps us discover the root cause Write the obstacle in terms of what you are currently doing rather than what you are not doing. Be honest – No one is judging you.

Experiments: Experiment to overcome the challenge. Once you find your best fit, it will become easy for you to tackle the problem at hand. You will also learn from the experiments that did not lead you to desired path. Against every obstacle write down at least three alternate experiments you can do to overcome it – research what others have done or speak to a mentor to brainstorm. Encourage experiments based on your strengths to enable a solution for you to achieve your dreams.

Accretive : Now that you have written details on dealing with obstacles and know various alternative experiments you may feel there is a lot of work to do. You may even have second thoughts now. Refrain from such thinking. Think of how every experiment can benefit you in other areas of life. Think of the benefits that will come through once you overcome the challenge. Against each of experiment write down the benefits you think will accrue to you. Thinking of benefits will put you in positive frame of mind. Your affirmative attitude results in increased motivation and energy levels to do things and accomplish goals!

Leverage strengths: All of us have strengths. The key is to leverage our strengths to achieve our goal. Against each alternative experiment write down which strength of yours will be tested. This will show you a picture of what you are truly capable of achieving. Realising that you have what it takes to do it will propel you even further towards your goal.

It is amazing how much we can gain when we choose to DEAL with an obstacle! When we have a concrete strategy to DEAL with our obstacles, they no longer hold the power to scare us. Our fear vanishes and we move towards action plan!

Action Plan

We now create a final action plan to make things happen in 2016! You already know your vision, are

aware of your obstacles and know how to deal with them. Taking into account both these factors you should be able to draw a final action plan. The only question now – what should this action plan look like?

Simply put a plan should lead to Action and Not Procrastination. A PLAN leads to action when it has the following elements:

Practical Timelines : Work expands to fill time – It is absolutely essential to attach a time frame to everything. A plan without specific timelines invites procrastination and as a result some tasks may never get completed. Timelines convert daily meaningless activities into a directed action. Hence it is necessary for timelines to be practical for you as Ideal may not be practical. Practical timelines will keep you motivated! Set your timelines today!

Lucid Milestones : A goal plan should be marked with lucid milestones. Lucid milestones let you know if you are on the right track, how far you have come and plus give you a sense of accomplishment. They allow you to celebrate small achievements which are very essential to boost motivation. When there are clear milestones, your energy is focused simply on getting to the next milestone. Milestones allow you to evaluate your progress. This makes the overall goal less daunting as you are simply moving from one milestone to the next. Decide your milestones today!

Alternatives: Many a times our plans depend on external circumstances. Sometimes they favour us and sometimes they don’t. Our plans should have ample alternatives to give us flexibility to adjust to external circumstances. When you draw alternatives, you are ensuring that you are progressing towards your goal under any circumstance. Often one thinks of alternatives when things are going against the plan; it is as important to accelerate when things are in your favour. Brainstorm your alternatives today!

Never give up: When you give up inside you don’t action on outside. Enjoying the journey is as important as the destination. If you have practical timelines, track your progress as per the milestones and have an effective approach by going for alternatives as per the situation – success will indeed come to you! Your progress will stop if you give up. Enjoy every moment of your progress towards your goal. Keep going! Never give up from today!

Congratulations! You have taken the first step t owards a dream 2016.
