We were in the middle of the crowded SB road, surrounded by cars zooming past, emitting a good dose of CO2. The only sounds that we heard were those of the horns and the hawkers hollering in precariously loud voices and then we came to a rickety gate that read #CuteShoots! A step inside and we were transported to a different world! Engulfed by the green cover, the chirping birds and the soothing sound of the water flowing, we were surrounded by tranquility and we couldn’t believe that we were on the same SB road, Pune.
That’s what you get when you step into Cute Shoots a #PlantNursery run by the charming Smita Pandya. A feeling of nostalgia settles on you and you want to soak in the serenity the place affords. Rich with flora and fauna, Cute shoots (plant nursery) is the place to be if you are a green lover. You’ll find here all kinds of plants, be it indoor or outdoor, along with cute paraphernalia that you can use to enhance your green space. What’s more, Smita also offers complete design solutions for your balconies or terraces and if you have neither, she can also do up a wall in your apartment–a little bit of green in your life, inviting the outdoors, indoor!
Smita a fauji wife was accustomed to huge spaces and was always surrounded by gardens. When she moved back to Pune permanently, Smita was appalled to see how Pune had changed into a concrete jungle. ‘I had a bit of space in front of my bungalow and thought of turning it into a nursery where green minded people can come together and learn and share their green experiences and also shop for all kinds of plants.’ says Smita. A botany student, Smita went back to her Alma mater, Fergusson College to pursue a Diploma in garden maintenance and Nursery Development. After completing the course Smita visited various nurseries in and around Pune to understand how they run and then started her very own venture Cute Shoots!
Spread across 2000 sq ft, Cute Shoots has everything related to gardening under one roof, compost, manure, gifting articles and plants both seasonal and perennial.
Smita also conducts various workshops at her nursery where you can get your hands dirty doing some gardening! Bonsai, Dish garden, Composting, Terrarium are some of the workshops that she takes for all ages.
Her nursery is a perfect example of cultivated wilderness with lilies, passion flowers, anthuriums, chrysanthemums and so many other flowers in full bloom, emanating a sweet smell enchanting you with their beauty! That’s how we would describe Smita’s nursery, a haven in the middle of a chaotic world, raw, virgin, untouched by the concrete jungle that surrounds it.
As I write this I am reminded of ‘Daffodils’ by Williams Wordsworth and am having my daffodil moment right now. As I close my eyes sitting here in the sweltering heat, I see a flash of Smita’s nursery which is a bliss of solitude and that rejuvenates me all over again!
Smita, we wish you turn a lot more people green not with envy but with pride! Here’s wishing you all the luck for your venture.
