Keeping fit in Monsoons

The onset of monsoon brings respite from the scorching heat of the summer but it also throws a different challenge for maintaining fitness. If you are used to morning walks or evening workouts in the open, the regular drizzles can affect these schedules. Moreover, the monsoon weather tempts all of us to indulge in hot and spicy food and other unhealthy stuff.  Viral infections thrive in the monsoon making us more vulnerable.

So how do we ensure that monsoon does not affect our health .

Exercise at Home

Turn you excuse of not being able to exercise in the open into a reason to exercise at home.

When working out at home stick to the same routine and timings. Buy some simple exercise equipments such as a pair of dumbbells, skipping rope, exercise mat,etc.

Set a personal goal to keep physically active at least 3 days a week.

Exercise Tips :

You can start your day with simple stretching exercises to warm up followed by a  set of 6-12 surya namaskars.

Sit-ups, waist bends, knee bends, calf exercises etc. are great ways to flex your muscles.

The stairs in your house are a superb exercising device themselves. Walking up and down the stairs is a superb tip for good monsoon fitness.

Practice yoga. Yoga is an exercise that can be performed both indoors and outdoors. Yoga also helps reduce respiratory problems that are very common during the monsoon season.

If you love to dance, dance like nobody’s watching. This helps you keep yourself flexible.

Consult a Professional

Working out with your fitness trainer is the same as driving the car with a navigation system. It keeps you on track. Repetition of a slightest wrong posture can lead to grave injuries over a period of time and keeping your postures right helps you achieve  results faster. It’s wonderful to know what your body needs and what exercises your body reacts to through someone who has immense knowledge of fitness, nutrition and health.

Eat Clean and Often

Eating 5-6 small meals a day and cutting out all processed carbohydrates and replacing them with complex carbohydrates such as whole grains , oatmeal. A clean, healthy and balanced diet is a key to being successful in your weight loss journey or your journey back to a healthy lifestyle. Do not skip meals which will slow down your metabolism.

Working out will give me big muscles.

Truth: Females won’t get big muscles like men because males have 10 times more testosterone as females.

Just doing cardio will help you lose weight.

Truth: It’s best to combine cardio with strength training to trim your waistline. Cardio increases your metabolism instantly, but dwindles down a short time after your cardio workout. Weight lifting keeps your metabolism going longer and stronger for hours after your workout.

Target your belly to burn the flab

Truth: You can’t  SPOT REDUCE your body fat despite of what you may have heard. You have to work on the body as a whole, and your body will eventually burn away the fat around your entire body—including an inner tube around the waist.

Exercise allows me to skip on dieting

Truth: A healthy body is made 40% with exercise and 60% in the kitchen . If you train hard and don’t eat properly you will not only stay hefty but you can actually injure your body because you are not giving it proper nourishment.
